The Practice Dot

practice dot 1I have a very bad habit of wandering around my apartment as I practice. It’s hard for me to stand still and concentrate, so I often find myself aimlessly strolling around, like a violinist in an Italian restaurant.

When very young children start playing the violin or viola they are presented with a large disk on which to stand. The disk has the outline of their feet, traced in various viola-playing formations. Obviously, I no longer need the feet outlines, but lately I have been craving the big disk, the place that marks where I stand. I can’t focus when I’m moving about. It’s one thing to wander over to the mantle and look at the pictures while I practice, it’s quite another to walk into the kitchen and mentally plan my dinner.

Like a child, this adult needs boundaries and structure.

Amy and I were in IKEA on Monday and I bought myself a practice dot. (It’s really a bath mat, but it makes a cute practice dot, no?)

I have been standing on the dot, and practicing like a good little solider for two days now.

That is fabulous. I have the same problem and I’m going to get one of those ASAP.

Dig the dot. I tied bells to the feet a particularly mobile student. Now I’ll have to go find a lovely mathmat of my own.

This is killer. In one of the potential practice spaces in our place I am hemmed in by a bed and a big trunk. In the other, it’s a free-for-all and I am not to be trusted. The other day I nearly trampled our kid while winding through some suites. I hope it didn’t scar him, but hey- at least it wasn’t Bolero.

I can’t wait for our Ikea to open.

I would like a practice dot, too, please. One which helps improve intonation as well as firmly, yet kindly, delivers small electric shocks whenever I even think about playing World of Warcraft while standing on it. Thank you for your time.
