Nerd Chicken

Janz and I invented an awesome new game at work today.  It is sort of a orchestral musician version of "chicken".

During a Pops concert when an orchestra plays many short numbers, there is often a lot of standing and sitting to acknowledge the applause from the audience.  We stand when they clap, we sit when they stop.

Tonight, Janz and I challenged each other to a game of chicken.  The person who has the guts to stand the longest once the orchestra has been cued to sit, wins.  It’s a lot harder than it sounds.   This is an excellent game for a pops concert.  I encourage all orchestral musicians to play this game as it is sure to bring hilarity into an otherwise drab evening.

Janz beat me every time.

I accidentally won at this game during our Pops concert tonight. We turn out to face the audience during the standing and the violas sit on the outside, so there is no real visual cue to sit back down. I ended up standing for too long and my stand partner (who happened to be my husband) laughed at me. This post has caused me to reframe and now I’m quite proud.

Nice work Courtney! Way to play hard. You’re in it to win it.

Amy, you should try to see how long you can keep the orchestra standing next pops! I’ll give you a $100 for each minute standing AFTER the audience stops clapping. I’m sure Kate would throw in some money too!

This is the coolest thing I have ever heard of. I am so making everyone I know play this game at our next concert.
